What Is the File Extension S3?

    Purpose

    • This file type was designed to make it easier to transfer files between computers or between cell phone and computer. It is formatted in the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).

    Why ASCII

    • By being in ASCII format, the file can be opened on almost any operating system. ASCII is a code for representing English characters as numbers, with each letter assigned a number from 0 to 127.

    How to Open

    • You can open an S3 file with Notepad or any program that performs text editing. It might look like a lot of strange, jumbled text unless you know what you are looking for and what it should look like.

    • S3 is a data file type, and all of the information in it is memory loadable data.

    Similar File Extensions

    • Data files associated with the S3 file include S1, S2, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8, S9 and "srec." These are all S-record files.
